Ultimate Frisbee!

Victor Chen

In Taiwan, when we mention sports, what do you think of?  It’s basketball, right?  I think every Taiwanese student has played basketball for a long time.  Do you still want to play it for another ten years?  Basketball is out of fashion now.  I want to introduce you to a new sport, Ultimate Frisbee.  Although Frisbee already has thirty years of history in the US, we have only played it for a few years in Taiwan.  Now, thanks to the Kaohsiung World Games, Frisbee has been successfully brought to Kaohsiung’s citizens and is now well known in Kaohsiung.

You may wonder if it will be hard to learn Ultimate Frisbee because you have never played a similar sport.  I have a couple of reasons why you don’t need to worry.  First, I have to say that Ultimate Frisbee is the easiest sport I have ever learned, and I would like to recommend it to girls who like athletics.  Ultimate Frisbee is similar to many sports.  The way to score points is like American football, and the strategy is like soccer.  When you are holding the Frisbee, you can’t move your pivot foot, just like one of the basic rules in basketball.  That doesn’t sound hard, does it?  Also, using different strategies to win is a great feeling.  If you like a strategic game or a sport such as soccer that requires team chemistry, you will love this sport.

The most important thing is that FCU has an Ultimate Frisbee club!  In fact, as far as I know, there are only two places where we can play Ultimate Frisbee in central Taiwan, and we are lucky enough to be one of them.  About ten years ago, there were a couple of foreigners putting up flyers downtown, looking for people to join an Ultimate Frisbee club.  That was the beginning.  After that, the club grew and finally the club found a good place to play – FCU.  We still work hard and want this club to keep going and to get better and better.

In conclusion, if you want to try this new sport or if you just want more information, you can join us at the FCU soccer field every Wednesday from 8:30 to 11:00 pm.  We hope to see you there!
