“Maleficent” – A Movie Review

Judy Lin & Emily Chan

You will never believe that someone has made a movie about a witch! This summer, Disney released a live-action re-imaging of an animated princess movie, Sleeping Beauty, from the villain's point of view. If you liked the “sweet” version, you’re sure to like this “spicy” one!

Maleficent stars Angelina Jolie in the title role, the evil witch from Sleeping Beauty. This story has three main characters, Stephan, King of the human kingdom; Aurora, his daughter; and Maleficent, a fairy living in a neighboring magical kingdom.

The story starts when little Maleficent and little Stefan first meet. They become friends, but their relationship slowly turns into something else; Maleficent falls in love with Stefan. Things change even more when the aging king of the human kingdom decides to overcome the Moors. He offers to name whoever kills Maleficent as his successor. Stefan has a strong ambition to become king, and that makes him betray Maleficent. He steals her fairy wings and gives them to the king as proof of her death. He is announced as the successor to the throne. Maleficent feels angry about Stefan’s betrayal, so she shuts herself off and becomes a bad witch. She declares herself “Queen of the Moors” and establishes a dark, oppressive kingdom.

On the Christening day of Stephan’s newborn princess, Aurora, Maleficent comes uninvited and gives her a curse as gift: on her sixteenth birthday, she will prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel, which will cause her to fall into a deathlike sleep, and no power on the Earth can remove the curse. The curse can only be broken by true love’s kiss. After that, King Stefan sends Princess Aurora to another place to hide her from Maleficent. Despite her dislike for Princess Aurora, Maleficent’s better nature slowly comes out. She starts to care about Aurora. One day, Princess Aurora sees Maleficent. She feels that Maleficent is always around her, just like her fairy godmother. That touches Maleficent’s heart, so she changes her mind and tries to revoke the curse. However she fails - remember, no power on the Earth can remove it. Soon, the curse comes to pass; Princess Aurora is pricked on the spinning wheel.

Princess Aurora falls into a deep, deep, deep sleep. Maleficent feels sad and abducts Prince Phillip from the human kingdom to have him kiss Princess Aurora. Unlike in an ordinary fairy tale, Phillip’s kiss has no effect. Maleficent sinks into depths of hopelessness. She thinks there is really no true love in the world. She cries and kisses Aurora. A miracle happens! Suddenly, Aurora awakes. However, things begin to go badly. Maleficent is forced to fight with King Stefan. Before he can kill her, her wings, freed from his chamber by Aurora, fly back to her and reattach themselves. She gets her power back, but she doesn’t want to take revenge on King Stefan anymore.

We think the photography in the movie really showed the emotions of the characters. In the beginning scene, The Moors was a bright, lively place. At that time, Maleficent had never interacted with humans. When she was betrayed by Stefan, her mind is no longer pure. The Moors became a dark world and everyone lost their smile; The Moors was not lively anymore. Maleficent sets up an impenetrable wall of thorns to defend against the attack of the human kingdom. This means that she also refuses to let anyone into her world again.

We can also see that other scenes reflect Maleficent’s change. When her love for Aurora grows, Maleficent recovers from Stefan’s betrayal. In the end, The Moors turns back into a bright, vibrant kingdom again.

Princesses are kind, beautiful, and always fall in love with a handsome prince. We all love princesses, but hate witches. However, have you ever thought about why witches are always evil in fairy tales? There must be a reason. Maybe they experience something woeful, angry or frightening, and these things may make them become evil. Even a friendly fairy such as Maleficent cannot escape. The movie shows us this in a different way. It also tells us that you can find true love from someone who really cares about you; not all love comes in the form of a handsome prince. This love will affect you in ways you can’t imagine, and you will gain more positive power, just like Maleficent. This fairy tale isn’t just a nice story; it also tells us a truth about life. Go see Maleficent and let it work its magic on you!
